Angels The Costumiers

Angels The Costumiers

Angels is the UK’s leading costumier to the film, television, theatre and music industries as well operating one of the largest fancy dress hire and retail businesses. Celebrating 175 years in business, made even more impressive by the fact they’re still family owned and run, Angels approached us to produce a book documenting their incredible history.

Tim Angel OBE, gave us an initial manuscript which charted his family’s business from its humble beginnings in London’s Seven Dials district in 1813, through to their leading role in the costume industry today.

Our approach

Our first step was a tour of their vast workshops and costume store in North West London. We quickly realised that there was a bigger story to tell and that ‘Behind The Seams’ could be marketed to a wider audience.

Working closely with the Angels’ team and Picture Editor Sandra Hilsdon, we sorted through a huge archive of reference material featuring all the stars of stage and screen. With commissioned and compiled photography, advertisements, quotes, stories and memorabilia, a large coffee table book began to take shape.

Our plan was to show how Angels’ work plays an important role in the development and history of culture, fashion and entertainment.

Together with a microsite and an exhibition of Angels’ costumes at the Old Truman Brewery in East London, ‘Behind The Seams’, has helped generate huge publicity on television, radio, national press and digital media.

“I am absolutely thrilled and delighted with the book…The end result is fabulous. I know you have all put so much into this and it shows and I am extremely grateful. At the beginning I couldn’t see how the book would work, especially after you suggested we changed it. You were completely right and we have ended up with a book I – and hope you – are very proud of.”
