Creating a distinctive brand and fun, intuitive user experience for an innovative app concept.

Vacay is the first app that lets you search for your dream holiday destination by weather type and preference.

The days of visiting your high street travel shop are long gone with over 80% of consumers booking their holiday online and 70% researching travel on their smartphone.

The app is built around the unique expertise of TV weather presenters John Hammond and Sara Thornton, joint owners of Weather Trending.

The task

Our brief was to create a distinctive brand, intuitive interface and user experience for the app including App Store marketing assets.

Our approach

We immersed ourselves in weather and holiday apps.

By researching both aspects of Vacay’s offering, we could see how related apps engaged customers, understand how to combine the two elements and discover where we could innovate.

We held workshops to research the market, identify customer segments and to establish the content that users wanted to see.


The bold V motif symbolises both sun and coastline.

Combined with a bright colour palette and carefully considered user journey, the app delivers a compelling experience that stands out from the crowd.

Each step is carefully crafted to ensure progression and to mitigate drop-outs along the customer journey.

Interface elements are tactile and familiar – with sliders and dials to select temperature, flight times and even the chance of rain. As a result, the app avoids having to rely on cramped pages filled with checkboxes and dropdowns.

Tone of voice is friendly and engaging with playful wording such as ‘surprise me’ providing a bit of fun along the way. The result is an app that is easy and enjoyable to use, and crucially one that you will want to recommend.
